Do you want an answer based on the initial implications of the expression? If so, it comes from the Christian religion and refers to the sin done by Adam. His sin was disobedience to God who had told Adam not to eat the fruit of a certain tree. Adam ate of the fruit because his wife, Eve, had been deceived by a creature called a serpent (different from out snakes today). The deception was that if people ate of the fruit of this tree then they would be like God. Man's sin was trying to be like God and disobeyed him in the attempt. It's also interesting to note that at the end of the world, the "Beast" has a number, 666, called 'mans number'. The number 6 is a symbol for man and the number 3 symbolized God. So, 666 is simply man trying to be God. The end of man will be like the original sin and fall of man. Both producing death to the unrighteous and unbelievers. The first attempt to be like God brought about physical death and the second ushers in a spiritual death. Interesting!
