You want to be a librarian? That's great! Librarians do so much more than just read and shelve books!

First- you need to get a Bachelor's Degree What kind of librarian do you want to be? If you want to work in a public library, I would say go for English, History,Political Science- any of the liberal arts. If you want to be a LAW Librarian, I would say major in Political Science. If you are interested in being a Science Librarian, major in any of the sciences. If you are interested in being a Medical Librarian, again study the sciences.

If Children's Librarianship interests you, again I suggest the liberal arts.

Then, once you get your BA or BS degree, go on to library school for your Master's Degree. You will need to take some "core" classes like Reference and Cataloging. Then, you can take classes in your 'areas' of interests.

Congratulations! This is a wonderful field.

Good Luck!

Become A Librarian

There are undergraduate library science programs, but you need a masters degree (MLS or MILS) in order to get a good job in a library with potential to advance. Library science programs tend to concentrate in one career path or another - preparing archivists or school librarians, for example. So, you need to choose a program that fits the path you want to follow. If you would like to specialize - work in an archive for a particular field, for instance - that would be a good undergraduate major and you may want to pursue a masters degree in that field, in addition to the MLS. If you're not sure what sort of library you'd like to work in, go talk to some librarians about their work. I would try to get work in the library while you're doing your undergraduate degree, or in a local museum. Something that fits your goals. It will help you figure out if you really like this and help you get into a graduate program as well.

A real librarian has a post-graduate degree. Go to undergraduate college and then go to graduate library school. Many large universities offer this, but the University of Illinois has one of the best known. Here's their page...

What to major in as an undergrad? A young friend of mine was a philosophy major from a small college in Pennsylvania and is now in the Library School at the University of Arizona in Tucson. A woman I used to work with who was a Poli Sci major went back to school at the U of Illinois program I mentioned. I know another woman who was a math major and is now a librarian (although I think that combination is a little odd). Major in something relevant that you like. Love books and knowledge for its own sake. And be real organized.

Go for it. As one of your other respondents said, we need more librarians.

There are some undergraduate degrees in Library Science -- but the top positions are dominated by people with graduate degrees (MLS -- Master's in Library Science).

Most people will get an undergraduate degree in something that interestes them & then get an MLS. If you want to be a general librarian, then English Literature might be a good undergraduate degree. But if you want to work in a specialized library another degree might be better. For example, someone who works in a math library would find it useful to have an undergraduate degree in math.

If you know that you want to be a K-12 school librarian, then it would behoove you to get a B.A. in education. You will still need to get a masters degree in library science in order to be librarian, but if you already have a teaching license it will save you time in library school.

If you want to work in any other kind of library, then major in whatever interests you.

Your bachelor's degree should be in a field in which you can specialize as a librarian. The easiest place to find a good job as a librarian is in a specialized library which deals with science or engineering. Accordingly, I suggest a bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science or in engineering.
