I went to DR last month for my honeymoon. It's great. Don't worry.

The locals are friendly welcoming people. Just follow the usual rules. Don't carry large amounts of cash, flash expensive jewelry etc.

Be careful of people selling timeshares outside resorts, just tell them you're not interested.

Enjoy the DR, it's truly a great place. I'd go again tommorow if I could afford it. lol

It's fine, been there loads of times. Santo Domingo can be a little daunting but apart from that all OK just don't be dripping in jewellery or things like that and you are fine. I went everywhere on a motor concho (little moped) they tell you not to do that either. I went to the Stadium in Puerto Plata to the Basketball game. We were the only white people there! I travelled all over with no problems. If you are worried go on organised tours. But seriously there is no problem at all. I married a Dominican. Only one word of waring very nice people but they rip you off with a smile. They do not attack you. Have fun the Dominican Republic is a beautiful country lots to see and do.

Cruise liners drop off tourists there everyday. I would think that it would be reletively safe. Anyway. Check out the FO website below.

I live in Chile and am from the UK. I have never been mugged here. I have friends in the DR and they say that, yes there is crime, but that it is not out of hand. Make sure you have some money to give a would be mugger, do not walk home drunk, go out with a police stamped photo copy of your passport, avoid dark streets, go to up market bars and enjoy the atmosphere.

I am sure you will learn salsa and the chances are you will not be mugged. Hotels in SA do not want you to leave ever, they want your money....I think there is very nice landscape.

The hotels seem really paranoid about people leaving. I think there are a lot of muggings and sexual assaults. I stayed in Punta Cana and to be honest there wasn't much to leave for. I went out on a tour once and all there was was plantations, resorts and really poor villages. I took a cab to disco a couple of times that was at another resort. I think they just don't want you wandering around the beach or streets at night because of the crime.

my family and i stayed at sun scape the beach. in punta cana. we did not have any problems. my husband and i left the resort for a walk. and the people outside of the resort were friendly they all said hola (hi). did not feel unsafe at all. if you walk on the road make sure you walk against the traffic. my daughter and i took a trip into San Domingo and did not have any problems. yes there is crime there just like any where you go. but the there is a strong presence of military and police i believe that is what keeps the crime rate down. we have been to the Dominic republic two time in a years time and looking forwarding to going back again the spring. enjoy yourself.

That's nonsense. Hotels like to tell you that so that you have to pay for guided tours everywhere. Domincan people are very friendly. Not much crime. Just don't wear your jewellry or anything fancy when you go to town and don't carry too much cash (convert it to Dominican Pesos and you will save money).

I was there recently and the only story I heard of a tourist havig problems was their hotel safe was robbed. didn't hear of any problems in town.

Santo Domingo could be the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European city in the Americas and in the event that you want to see one of the UNESCO World Heritage List then, this hotelbye may be the place. Santo Domingo is a collage of cultures and neighborhoods. It's where in actuality the seems of life, domino parts smacked on tables, backfiring mufflers and horns from severe traffic. In the heart of the city may be the Zona Colonial, wherever you will find among the oldest churches and the oldest remaining European. Also, in the Zona Colonial you will see Gazcue, one of many city's oldest neighborhoods, filled with previous Victorian properties and tree-lined streets.

Booking a holiday in an all-inclusive resort is the biggest mistake you can make. This is only a ploy so the resort can make more money selling their guided tours. Get out and experience the real world. It is probably safer than most of North America.

i have been there before, but i was in more residential areas since i have family over there but id say it is fine, beaches are breathtaking if you speak spanish all your troubles will go away if not make sure to travel with a friend just in case, yes there is crime there but where isnt there crime and if you find that place tell me. i think you should go to santo domingo and la romana they are beautiful. i wouldnt travel to close to the border though, because those are the poor parts, but overall the people can be really nice. they have great pizza also. enjoy your trip!!!!!

No the tourist areas are well away from the trouble spots and are sealed off by the military.
