How many yards IN the first down?
I guess that would depend on how well the offense ran the first down play. All things considered in can be anywhere in between
-100 and +100 yards. Granted both would have to be a spectacular play.
Now if you wanted to know haw many yards were necessary for a team to gain a first down...that would be 10.

You must have at least 10 yards for a 1st down with a normal play, if a penalty has occured you might need less or more depending on the penalty and where the ball is placed relative to the 1st down marker.

there are exactly 10 in most cases unless you got a penalty which sets u back to 1st and 15 then it is 15 yards or a holding may set you back to 1st and 20 then it is 20 yards and encroachment on the defense will make it 1st and 5 then u need 5 yards

10 unless there is an offensive penality and they are moved back (a good example was in the Jacksonville game when Jacksonvill false started. They got moved back 5 yards bringing 1st down to 15 yards.)
