I personally would go for the kit. They are engineered and tested for proven performance in each application. You won't save the entire 500 dollars anyway, there are some parts you will have to purchase.

If you are a GOOD welder and fabricator then you could do it yourself.

There are going to be other parts that the kits sometimes come with though you'll have to fab other than the spring over parts.

Youll also need some special tools like leafspring pullers.

If you have 4x4 then you may need to extend the front driveshaft as well as be careful of the angle.(I don't believe most spring overs go high enough to worry about this but Im not sure if you are going to add blocks as well)

Will you need extended brakelines? What about the E brake cable, will you need to move it or replace it with a longer one?

If your good with tools and good at fabricating then you'll probably have it done in no time but sometimes buying the kit garauntees the correct parts for the job.

If you can save the money id say do that. You dont know the specs on a pre fab kit. You may make a beautiful rendition of a lift kit and find its not strong enough to handle the stress you will be putting on it...better safe than sorry.
If you have a backup vehicle id say go for it though its always fun making crap yourself. Then your buds see it and want one then you can charge em .

If you do it and mess up your frame, who is going to pay for it? That is one of those things that you could save some money... or you could cost yourself more. If you have confidence in yourself and you have done it before, go for it.
