Hi,
I posed this question last year in a few different places and the responses that I got were varying from - It's because black people don't get the same rights and exposure in music and stuff (I'm sorry I turn on the music channel and 90% of it's black stuff), to we are just celebrating our heritage (I mean as has already been said here, what if we celebrated by having the music of white people award??) - So the concept in my opinion has no defence - I mean why can't they just have the soul or reggae awards or something.. To me it all stinks of an organiser wanting to make up some awards to make loads of money for themselves.. I am going to start the BlackPride music awards next year. ;)
The MOBO's should be classed as racist, which makes me wonder why the government organisations never act to stop racism towards whites, which in my eyes is at least as prevalent as the opposite.

The mobo awards are by name a racist organisation, as is the Black Police Officers Association. Any orgainisation that stipulates it is only for people with a certain colour skin is racist.
Imagine the uproar if there was a White Police Officers Association!!! Or a MOWO awards!!!

I have to agree here too. Sure MOBO has had a big influence in the music industry, but to set aside an award ceremony specifically for it I actually feel restricts a vast majority of other influences. Next we will be having a MOOO award for the far east, MOSAO for brazillians, etc and so on.
Now we have the Grammy, the Brits and MTV awards among others. Why not drop them all and have one big International Music Award where music of all styles is taken into account.
Sure it can be broken down into different styles but at least everyone would get a look in, even Napalese pipe blowers. People might actually discover music styles they never knew existed.

I totally agree and was thinking of asking a similar question myself.I am not racist at all but can you imagine the uproar if there was a MOWO awards(of white origin) there would be riots and you would never hear the end of it.I actually think the mobo's are racist against white people!

Do ya think we'd ever be able to have a MOWO awards, I think not, Racism works both ways, I think its disquisting, BAN THE MOBO AWARDS.
I had to mention the racism thing, I,m not in anyway trying to accuse you of anything, but just pointing out the facts !

I think the concept was very necessary at the time, but over the last few years MOBO has found it's place in the mainstream, so is past it's sell by date.

Im racist, im not proud of it but i cant help the way my brain thinks.
Maybe this is why the MOBO awards puts my back up also.

you are absolutely right.....im not racist either but with the separation of each thing designed for black people i.e. black entertainment television, black history month, MOBO...etc...it becomes more clear to me that there are some who say they arent that are.....its said too often that white people are racist if they express an opinion that opposes the demonstrations of black pride...and while i dont necessarily oppose them, i dont necessarily agree either...having the aformentioned things for the black community should not be allowed because they are black but because they are american....their freedom rings just as much as white peoples freedom....i dont see a white history month...and MTV and VH1 play the same types of music...in my opinion it is not the opposition who are racist it is those who feel the need to point out that black people are black and say "hey lets have black history month"....why? so more attention can be drawn to the fact that they are black?...hell, thats obvious- i CAN see (of course i am excluding your typical bigots....they dont count as far as im concerned) so as for your question i dont believe ANYTHING should be designed around ethnicity

I think it's a bit of a crazy idea particularly as most modern popular music originated from black music. Think about it, even The Beatles & Elvis were influenced by the blues music which was predominanlty black music.

I totally agree - but I feel that as a white person I am not able to say such things without being considered a racist bigot. In the same way that I am not allowed as a man to speak out against Man-Hating Feminists without being called sexist.
Its bizarre, its like the complete opposite to male chauvinism and white supremacism but I can't speak out about either!
I couldn't agree more matee.
