It's ridiculous! I think that as students, we are mature enough to know what sites are appropriate and what sites are bad.

I don't find it a problem at uni as I have never come across a censored website on the network as of yet. It was very different in school though where when 10 people visited the same web page it would be banned, even if it was educational - like once I was trying to do some research for my politics class on the National Farmer's Union and it was banned! I think it definitely is an insult to education to not allow students to surf the net freely and learn new things, I think it is only fair to ban any obscene websites, but all others should be allowed!

I think censorship is bad in genral, but in school it is justafied becaue there has to be a place to study...but the school systems take it way too far. I made the website Electric-Smoothie which was a CGIProxy that you could use to get around those places, and to not be blocked (I had to take it down after a year and a half cause i cgot in trouble by the school principle). I belive if used justly (it asn't been) it is justified.

"But if kids are playing around at school then they won't get anyhting done," I hear you all scream....then let them. THey have to grow up sometime and be responsible for there actions and take the consequences like it should be taken.

BEsides, they do not review all sites they block....tehy send bots to do it and they get things wrong sometimes and you block information. Go to http://peacefire.org and look at all the stuff certain ones have blocked stupidly.

You can feel glad, sad or even angry.
Bottom line, its not your computer so respect that. You may not abuse the computer but others are bound to. Even if everyone is responsible, there are too many hackers and virus's floating around that it's best to limit computer activities to a bare minimum

I don't think it is censorship when someone who lets you use their computer and their bandwidth for free says there are places you can't go. It's kinda like driving on the highway. Rules have to be followed. Drive with abandon on your own computer at home.

I don't really know if my university does this, but I don't really mind if they do. I only use university computers and internet to check my email and visit university webpages or find articles in scholarly journal collections. I figure if you want to access some restricted site, do it on your own time and your own computer with internet access.

You're using their connection to the internet, and if you're in the lab, most likely their computers. They have the right to block whatever sites they want.

You may not agree with their policy, but you have to abide by it.
