It's just an idea, but there is a switch somewhere in the human brain that wants what someone else has. It doesn't matter what it is, be it a barbie doll or a car. People think that they have to prove that they are just as good/cool as someone else. I think that this idea goes beyond that of children. Adults do it as well. When your son is 30, there will probably be someone he knows that does the exact same thing: he buys a new car, his friend buys a new car. I think it's a bit of competition happening, which can be prominent among males. One has to be better or "out-do" the other. I would suggest that your son refrain from saying anything at all to his friend the next time he buys something. Hope that helps. If not, sorry. :)

Its a competitive thing. Lots of kids try to get something first just so they ARE the first to get it. I would suggest your son waits until he HAS got whatever he is buying before he mentions it.
Alternatively, tell the friend he is buying something either totally ridiculous or something totally different to what he wants to buy and see what happens

Just to beat your son to the punch , However as long as the other kid is spending his money then your son does not have to spend yours . The reason I know this I have the exact same problem.

jealousy - my step son does the same thing - my son got the garage remodeled for a bedroom, so my step-son had his mom re-do HER garage (or a tiny part of it) for HIS room - jealousy -- nothing you can do. and as long as your son has what he wants and needs, why should you care what anyone else has, including your son's friend? Remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
It is also the most annoying.
Your son should feel pleased that he has such great taste.

Obviously, your son's friend is incapable of thinking for himself. Besides, if it's not you or your son's money he's spending, what do you care?

he could be jealous, or trying to 'out do' him. Tell him to stop telling his friend before he buys something if it really matters to him.
