Where do you live and when do you want the flowers to bloom?
In warmer climates (e.g., UK), hardy perennials are good - I like pansies, they are virtually impossible to kill!! If you want annuals, petunias are fantastic and bright and come in a range of shade. Both kinds of flowers bloom right through spring and summer.
For bulbs, you can't beat tulips and daffodils. Daffodils come out late Feb/early March here, and last year my tulips were blooming by the middle of March. Irises are nice (but more tempermental to grow), and come out in April and May.
If you are after something that grows high, Gladiolas are beautiful (they bloom from July to September usually), and come in a range of colours.
Hope this helps!! :)

I'm wondering what size and type "flower" you are really looking for and where you want to plant since you have bushes in front. You could plant spring blooming bulbs now in any color you like. Liatris is a nice bulb and is purple and has a spiky form which is maybe 12" tall or less. This is also a good time of year to get plants and flowers at clearance and a good time to plant them. If you want somewhat tall flowering plants Russian Sage is nice and can get about 5' by 5'. They have pretty purple blue flowers mid summer to winter, also Bluebeard is similar, but shaped different and flowers are more blue. Both are hardy and simple. Purple salvia is hardy and very easy to grow and spreads fast. For low growing ground cover in blue or purple you could try hardy geraniums - they are easy and spread. If you want yellow flowers try Coreopsis or Rudbeckia, both hardy and easy and will keep blooming all summer if kept dead-headed. Daylilies are easy and come in different heights and colors. I've recently planted ground cover roses in beautiful pinks and they are blooming like crazy and very pretty. For a flowering vine try Clematis. They are easy and hardy and have varying sizes and colors and shapes that all would go with your yellow house. If you want something other than perennials, plant pansys. They are very pretty now and low to the ground, if thats what you want, and should look good in spring, or plant snap dragons. You could also plant lily bulbs, of which there are many types and colors, and they would come up in the spring and summer. Good luck.

The complementary color to yellow is purple, so if you want the flowers to really pop, then plant purple ones. Blue is also nice and vibrant against yellow. Pansies are good right now. And you can plant bulbs for tulips and irises for spring bloom.

Garden Mums are in season right now, and they come in several different colors these days. It depends what your taste is.. if you like more of a monocromatic look, get yellow and white flowers. If you like hot colors, go for orange and red. Or if you like a cutesy country look, try blues and purples.

Red geraniums would be really pretty. My parent's house is yellow as well and they have bushes in front as well, and my mom has Window boxes with red geraniums and it makes it very pretty.

Try some purple flowers: lavender, russian sage, and many other purple varieties. Works nicely with yellow.

I bet deep orange marigolds would be very nice. I also have to echo what all these other folks are saying about purple, like irises. That would be nice, too.

Purple petunias would contrast nicely. Colors opposite on the color wheel complement each other.
