it is not so much as to what aspect of accounting that makes the most $$$... try to learn a lot from your degree and learn good... then after graduation if you can start your own business using the knoweldge you got from your AA, that will make you BIG money... be sure that it is your passion in doing what you want to do and the rest will follow... whether it is in payroll, ap or ar, it does not matter... you are half way there just work on it real well... good luck!

I am an Accounting Manager for a company and I got here not by degree but by word of mouth. I was an admin for a few years prior and worked my way up. Try to learn as much about the field as you can in all aspects, mostly compliance laws and taxes. Otherwise, if you can do pretty much everything, including HR and other admin duties and still handle the accounting, you can become a Controller, and they make some good $$. But, yeah freelance people who open their own offices do make some great cash, also Quickbooks consultants who are freelance do really well.

Payroll makes the most $$ if you are doing this as a career you are not going to make much. However if you do this on a freelance basis you could make a lot of money. My cousin's accountant does payroll and he makes over 200K a year.
