I write professionally and have been influenced by writers such as Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. Heinlein's style was to introduce the story and characters beginning with a strong action scene, and Asimov excelled at clarity and simple explanations. I keep these two concepts in front of me as I write and it has certainly improved my writing.

Also, everytime I see an attractive womam, my wife is a significant influence to get me to put my eyeballs back in my head.

I guess that a significant influence would be one that could measurably influence something one way or the other.Such as, If a person returned a wallet to the owner, money still in place,to the owner there might be a significant influence on whether or not that person thought that people were mostly honest.

In accounting, "significant influence" is when you own between 20% - 50% of the voting stock of another company, who is also one of your vendors.
This gives your company a "significant influence" over the practices of your vendor.
As far as the arts & humanities....sorry, I don't know-I'm an accountant who is tone deaf, can't draw a stick figure & can screw up a paint by numbers.
