Go into almost any office and look on the people's desk. You will find a stack of trays usually labeled "Inbox" and "Outbox". In the days of interoffice "snail mail", when they delivered the mail, they dropped it into the "inbox" tray. They then picked up any mail you have waiting to go from the "outbox" tray. The names got carried over from in snail mail to e-mail.
