Because their body is adapting to so many changes. The second trimester is said to be the easiest because the body is fully ready by then, and the baby is still very small and therefore light. And during the third trimester the baby starts becoming heavy.

I'm obviously not a woman but we have four children so I've experienced a few trimesters of pregnancy, as an observer. ;-)

There are so many hormonal and other changes going on with a pregnant woman's body in the first trimester, that it can use up all of the food energy pretty quickly. Also, the increase in Hcg just has that effect on some women.

It takes a lot to "grow" a baby. All the changes in your body will make you feel exhausted. A lot of big things happen growth wise in your first trimester. When I was pregnant I ended up very sick where I needed to have IV's, special kinds of nausea medicine..I was a mess for about 3 months. Then one day it was like someone put a match under my bum and I had energy again. Your strength should come back once you are through the first few weeks.

I believe it's hormones. Once the hormones shift in the second trimester most women get over the exhaustion. My exhaustion lasted all the way until I was 29 weeks, that was when the doctor discovered I was severely anemic. Now that I take iron supplements I feel much better.

All the hormonal and body changes going on take your energy away. Kind of like teenagers going through puberty---I guess growing takes a lot out of you! And it's times 2! Not only that but the baby inside is developing so rapidly. Not necessarily in size, but all the organs and nervous system, etc have been developing too so I imagine that takes out some energy as well.

Becuase your body is going through a major change and you have more hormones going through you at the time of pregnancy then a non-pregnant woman would have in 100 years ( this is true). The tiredness returns in the last tri becuase............ well your just plum worn out!

I think it has something to do with the fact that a baby is growing inside of you. Your body goes through so many changes, that its impossible to imagine that it wont have any effect on you. Your body is going crazy building that new baby, protecting it and nurturing it. It could be because of many other reasons, but I think this covers it.
