I have many gay friends and I hate when people ridicule people for being gay. Why is it that it still has not been accepted after so many years?

Because america is full of judgmental prudes that think that they are better than other people and can't learn to accept others for who they are.

U.S. law was based on British common law, which was, in turn, based on Catholic church law. Our culture reflects those origins and, sadly, the various bigotries that go with it. The Confederacy, when they broke with the Union, cited Northern rejection of Christian teaching (esp. the Right to own slaves) as one of the reasons why. The laws, and cultural bias, against homo-sexuality derive from the same source. The Religious Reich, despite being a numerical minority, are organized and loud, which gives them a disproportionate amount of influence in Government. The only way the GLBT community will ever achieve an equal voice is to get equally involved. Confrontation, protest, and displays of solidarity have their place, but ultimately it is protest in the voting booth that will decide the issues. When we make it clear that an anti-gay position can cost someone an election, then, and only then, will politicians start taking notice. Even if there is no one you want to vote for, there's bound to be someone you want to vote against. It's not so much to get our guy in, we've got to keep their guy out.

Because most people are absent-minded pricks, that are raised to be homophobic idiots. And it all goes back to the saying "People fear what they don't understand". And most people still don't have an understanding of the Gay community. I'm not gay, but I understand love is love. And if that means being with someone of the same sex, then do what makes you happy. And for anyone that ridicules and harasses gay people, are only afraid and have no clue about this lifestyle.

I dont think all are at all but you have a very strong religious lobby that is very intent on keeping ...we the sheeples ...scared most of the time .america has always been a little backward socialy and i think the fact that a lot of americans feel their country lacks an identity just plays into the overall fear that the governments encourage, its a bit sad really ,and such a waste of collective energy ...sad...sad...sad.

It would be nice if the kids coming up now could change it but there is a policy of dumbing down the kids in most american schools so it may take a bit of time yet.

The majority of Americans DO accept gays. Its a small but vocal and way too powerful group of kkkonservative kkkristians that dont accept gays. Unfortunately, they have control of all branches of the US Government.

The majority of the population has grown up in a homophobic society, and raised their children to be the same way. It isn't easy for people to chang ethere actions and beliefs just because it is the media definition of "wrong." Also, many people are offset by the idea of people that are different than they are.

Much is based on fear and ignorance of what is to be gay. They see gays are sexually active 24/7 and we are out to recruit others to our lifestyle. The religious right has used the pulpit to make gays there number one Target of hate.

People fear what they do not understand. They don't understand homosexuality because of the way gays are portrayed by the media in today's society and because we, as a society overall, are generally a little homophobic, because people tend to focus on just the sex part of the relationship. What people need to realize is that I don't go around wondering what straight people do in bed and judge them for it so why should they do it to me?

Because sadly the U.S. of A. has become a theocracy dedicated to Christians only. Gays need not apply. It just is what it is. Sad really when you consider Gay people have given the world art, culture, aesthetic and the like. Harming no one but being harmed by everyone, through word or deed, all in the name of God.

according to the bishop and elders council they're allowing the lgbt community in the church(civil unions and marriage within the church). The religious leaders (jewish, catholic, christian and one other which yahoo won't let me say on here)praise this statement. They talk about full equal rights for the lgbt community..That hatred, bigotry and discrimination doesn't belong in any religion worthy of name.So not all religious people are not accepting of gay people.Just the false christians.
