Does it annoy you that kids are asking homework questions instead of picking up a book and researching it themselves, ie name the oceans, capital of, quotes from Shakespeare etc etc

the funny thing is that they have time to type out a huge question and sit and wait for answers, and then sort through all the answers to see who is right, but it would have been easier to turn their book back three pages to see it for themselves.

Yes, but I think its because everything today is so instant! If people were more willing to take time with each other and slow down, perhaps our children would do the same. Time and patients seem to be obsolete these days. The best thing you could do instead of giving an answer, show them how to use a map, dictionary,or Internet and encourage them, even challenge them to find something.

Yahoo! Answers is a bad place to try and get homework help. I try to help with math questions when I can that way the person can try to learn the steps to use on the next problem. Sometimes a teachers explanation or a book explantion just doesn't help, having other people explain a problem can sometimes help, but if someone asks for their entire assignment to be done I try to only help them along the way.

Well, with today's technology, they could as easilly be looking it up on Yahoo or Google, so it's not such a stretch that they come here looking for a straight answer. I agree that looking it up in a book would be the ideal choice, but given the option of looking through a book for a specific answer and having it right at my fingertips, I just might do the same thing. Kudos to you for standing up for the way things ought to be!

Is this your own kids, or just random ones that knock on your door? If the former, then tough, they're yours. If the latter, then perhaps you should consider (a) moving house; (b) not answering the door. Or are you a teacher? In which case, whom do you expect them to ask. And no it doesn't bother me, because I generally know the answer. If you don't know the answer, say something profound like, what do I look like, a dictionary.

You're just a bit upset you didn't pay more attnetion at school aren't you?

Yes it annoying that they look for the easy way out but some of them do ask if anyone could help them in finding the research items necessary to find the information which is a positive thing. At least they are not all lazy. I would rather see them ask for the resources to help them then to see them just give up and not do their assignments.

No, give them the answer and how you got it.
If they are really trying to figure out how an answer is determined, they will learn from it.
If they just want to write down an answer to get their homework done, all the better for the rest of us when we need a job.

Not at all. I would say that it shows initiative. The internet after all is one big encyclopedia of information...and "answers" is the part that talks back to you.

Everyone here could find the information they want by doing a simple google search - but everyone here is still lazily asking others. Whats the difference? There is no difference.

yep....

everyone that answers "tells them this is the way to do homework... I don't need to learn it, someone on Yahoo will tell me the answers... All I need to do is put their answer on my paper and then hand it in.... why waste time on my schoolwork when I could be doing something better like playing Grand Theft Auto or something?"

They are doing research by asking questions on Yahoo Answers.
At least they care about doing their homework
