The recommendations and procedure are all on the label under the hood.
It is the Vehicle Emissions Controls Information (VECI) label that declares the engine size, emissions equipment and tune-up requirements/specs.
Be sure to disconnect the adjustment connector or ground the jumper, as required, or your ignition timing will not be within spec, and
1) will not be able to pass emissions test
2) emissions will rise beyond acceptable limits
3) Performance will be seriously compromised.
The timing marks are located on the front end (the end with the belts on it) of the engine.
It will be very helpful if you clean the pointer and the mark, and then "paint" them with a little white-out before you attempt your adjustments.
Also, before you start the car, loosen the distributor clamp bolt enough to be able to twist the distributor, but not so loose that there is no friction to hold it in place.
When all done, secure the clamp bolt, and don't forget to disconnect the adjusting connector.

Good Luck

I am assuming that your car does not have a distribuitor but a computer controll ignition ( all you can see is the coils ) now if I am correct there is no way to make any adjustments to the timing but to install adjustable cam gears. this needs to be done by a speed shop , not somenthing you can do right at home because you can do some engine damage, cam gears are about $200 and it can cost you about $300 for installation. That is all summing that you have a computer controll ignition if not just follow the directions given by the first responze. Good Luck!
