How well do pc games work with it? Is the image blurred in-game or less responsive than a crt by a noticeable amount? What about surfing the internet or other software?

Well, I don't exactly have a 40" but I have a 24" running at 1920 x 1200. and at work we have 36"s

Make sure the resolution in your graphic card is the native resolution of your monitor. LCDs in particular don't work well at other resolutions as what they do is a crude scaling as opposed to the way CRTs deal with resolutions.

The responsiveness of most LCDs used to be poorer than CRTs but the newer ones can manage. Generally with any large form display, the "sharpness" of the image is limited by resolution of the graphics card, unless you use a multi-panel system with multiple inputs (like in a video wall) which requires specialized hardware. Even if you have such a system, most games wont have a setting above 1920 anyway.

It depends on your graphcis card. I have hook up to plasma tv 60 inches or so and if you have the proper resolution its a buety but if not it looks like fuzzy garbage. I had to adjust it to make it good to watch movie but edges still cut out. So it wasnt that good. Make sure beforehand you get the right tv that lets you set the resolution.
Games are good as long as you get right tv as i said earlier and if
you have a good graphics card. THe image should not be less responsive but when i hooked my pc up it is blurry. I can watch a movie fine but small icons and details, hard to read. Internet is good but you cant read small details so you must put font on large. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD GRAPHICS CARD AND A TV THAT CAN SUPPORT IT and you will be set.
