Life wasn't such a rate race then. People actually had the time, taste and intelligence to value good things in life. There was no easy recreation such as TV, internet, etc. If one wanted to express oneself, they had to write, paint, compose, sculpt all - leading to better sensory pleasures than options we have today.

Also like someone said, life was not easy those days - so only valuable stuff was awarded praise - you might find substandard stuff from yesteryears passing off as classical stuff now - boils down to standards.

That's not a classical pic -it's 19 century, Victorian era -- looks to me like maybe one by the English artist Alma-Tadema or in much the same style, idealizing life in classical Rome or Greece.

I have pondered that for myself. They tend to be stuck a kind of fixation much like you would find in a football fan or other fan of stimuli.
