Because not only are they cheap to purchase, but you can pay for however much you want, you're not attached to any contract, and the signal is provided from Sprint/Nextel towers (which are almost everywhere nowadays). I work for Nextel, and we sell a lot of them based simply on these facts.

Because not only are they a cell phone,but a two-way if you know someone else who also has one.
