get a pharmaceutical company (or other business that wants to suck up to you) to pay for it.
That's what my boss does and she calls it our holiday party.

Simply, take up collections, use the space you are given well, and coordinate with some other event.
First, tell everybody that is going to be at the party to invest some cash. Second, if you work in an office space, find a space not used or usable. Speak to your manager and the janitor. Make sure come with an exact date time and promise to clean up. Also, make sure the manager and janitor are okay with it and have spoken about it .
Third, a party is not about lights and clockwork. It is about cool people. A good party can be in a grey room with only juice and chips if you have lively people there.
Find poets who want to speak in front of a crowd, student artists who wish to paint people, and street performers.
All over nyc and most big cities you will find street performers. Do not be scared of them and ask them what are they doing at a particular time and if they would like to perform at a party. If their fee is acceptable you have your entertainment.
They all to often will not be so high priced.
You get an array of different musicians painters mimes and poets and your party will have something for everyone.
For the musicians choose jazz and classical artists, instrumentalists. Vocalists are tougher because they have loud voices which can make things to loud, unless you can find a vocalist with a nice voice that can be effective with a low resonance. Also, find unique acts. They are around. Give them a shot.

Rent a cheaper Hall, get a decent DJ & do not supply the drink...make the employees pay for the booze & beer.
Have free soda for the non drinkers, thats also being a responsible employer. Give away a few prizes.
Pretty simple, if you dont want to pay for the DJ, then trade the DJ for an equal dollar value of what your company sells.

Make everyone take their hard earned paychecks and pitch in. Then ask them all to bring the food, and drinks. Ask the ones that always want to be noticed for acheivements at work , to decorate for it. Tell them you want them to use their imagination and come up with the decorations. Waa-Laa! A party you paid not a dime for!!!!
