The drain in the kitchen sink at my office smells really bad sometimes when water is poured down it. We don't have a disposal. I've tried pouring anmonia down the drain and then running hot water for several minutes but it hasn't helped at all. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try bleach or a drain cleaner.

It could also be that the trap (the bow in the pipe) is not adequate to block the sewer gases from coming back up.

Alright.... As a professional housekeeper, I've run into this problem in several of my clients homes. Here is what I've done... and it works great!

(You don't have to be a professional to do this.)

Your pipe probably need to be cleaned. It might be a little messy, but it's a simple solution to dumping $ down the drain when all it's going to do is help cover the smell for a few days. Drain blocker cleaners don't do the job either.

**Put on your gloves (it is kind of a gross job). Get a bucket and put it under the pipes/drain. Turn off the water, incase you forget that the pipes aren't connected. Unscrew the pipes and pull apart. (usually its around the "S" curve that gets nasty buildup). Take a rag and pull it through the pipes and rinse them out (at another sink).

Put them back together and tighten... your drain should smell just rosey for a long time! :)

***This is also a good solution to slow draining or plugged drains. Hair and soap film gather on the sides of the pipe and build over time. (The soap scum usually turns black with age).

My bathroom drain as well as my kitchen drain smells from time to time, I use vinegar and baking soda to help clear the drains and then I put a couple of tablespoons of realemon juice and just let it go down on its own. The bakingf soda and vinegar also act as a drain cleaner. Just two tablespoons baking soda followed by half cup vinegar...let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse with luke warm water. Then the juice. The concoction doesn't harm the environment, pets, or most importantly kids.

Lemon Juice! wash some lemon juice down the drain. Lemon does a great job of killing scents. if you have this problem with a disposal drop some cut up lemon in your sink and then run the disposal. It may even help to poor some draino or something down there to clear it out.

pour baking soda, (dry) down your sink, then pour vinegar (lots) into the drain. It will fizz up like crazy, now run really hot water down your drain for a couple minutes. This should help.

You have trap issue, sounds like you are pushing sewer gas up from the drain into the kitchen. Get a plumber to check it out. If it is due to bacteria try bleach, rinse well, then lemon.

I've heard that white vinegar helps with the odor. After you clean out your coffee pot with white vinegar, pour it down the drain while it is very hot and that should help.

There could be several reasons why you drain smells. There could be food particles or debris stuck in your pipes. This can be solved by a good drain cleaning, with bleach or non-chemical drain cleaner. Another possible reason is that there could be sewer backfill, which might involve rerouting pipes. Other situations can be solved by a plumber’s snake that can help scrape away build up.
