Is the drain working properly? All sink drains should have a trap that keeps a little water in it to prevent sewer gas from coming back up the pipe. If what you are smelling is sewer gas then have the drain checked out for a leak. If the drain is working fine, you may have a bacterial build up in the pipes so try baking soda alone first. Ammonia is a toxic substance and should be used only if nothing else works. One thing i have found that masks odors fairly well is lemon juice. It smells good, is acidic and kills some bacteria, and is not toxic.

Use 1/2 cup baking soda, followed by a pint of vinegar. This will start to bubble up and eat away grime and crud in pipes which is causing the smell. Let sit for 15 min and flush with hot water. Pouring lemon juice down drain weekly helps too.
Also get a good strainer so food won't go down into pipes.

If the problem is close to the surface, push some baking soda down the drain and follow it with vinegar. Use the cheap stuff, not tasty red wine etc.
Ammonia is dangerous - somebody could pour bleach over it and get Homeland Security all excited - but you knew that and flushed it well.
Last resort - call a plumber and have your checkbook handy!

Try a drain cleaner first because it sounds like there could be some build up on the pipes then pour lemon juice down the drain after you have cleaned the pipes of the drain cleaner. Good Luck.

There's a product called "Bioclean". It works as a natural enzyme and essentially eats up the crud in drains that cause those nasty smells. Most large plumbing companies would have it or you could do a google search to see where you could get it.You might have to use it more than once to keep the drain smelling clean longterm.

baking soda and warm water. Pour the soda a little at a time and let it sit there then run warm water slowly (lemon juice is another good option).
Amonia won't do much for smells at all.

You need to pour baking soda first, then ammonia, let stand for several minutes, then rinse with lots of hot water.
