I rented a property a few years ago and I'm curious about its history. How would I go about finding out who the past owners were, going back a hundred years or so? I no longer live in that state and I don't know how to even begin the research. Thanks for helping me.

An increasing number of counties have made land records accessible online. Go to the official county government website and find the office for either the "County Clerk" or the "County Recorder of Deeds." Look for "Land Records." If you know the name of the person or entity that owned the property when you rented it, then you can do a search for that person's land holdings, find the document that shows who they bought the property from....And then do a search for the former owner's land transactions, and find the document that shows when they bought the property, and who from....And so on.

Of course this only works if the records are online. But in a lot of counties, they are.
