You don't have to report it to the police. You do have to make a reasonable attempt to locate and notify the presumed owner. That would include a certified letter to their last known address asking them to remove it or it will be disposed of. If you have already done that then 6 months is more than enough time to take possession.

I believe you can, but it has to be reported to the police first and wait for the amount of time they give you and then, maybe then ...it might be yours.
