A combination is just a group of objects.
A permutation is a group of objects arranged in some order.
Say you had to choose 2 numbers from 1,2 and 3
The combinations would be
1 and 2
2 and 3
3 and 1
ie 3 combinations
The permutations would be
21 and 12
23 and 32
31 and 13
ie 6 permutations ... more because the ORDER matters.

It's all based on the idea of order and whether or not the order matters.
In permutations, order matters. If you have 8 runners and you are looking at how many different ways the runners could win gold, silver, or bronze in the Olympics, the order matters. It's going to matter to the runner if they come in first or third.
In a combination order does not matter. I have 7 different ice-cream toppings and I can only pick 3. It's not going to matter to me if I put sprinkles on then fudge then the cherry, or if I put on the cherry, the sprinkles and then the fudge. So the order of the toppings doesn't matter in this situation, so you divide out all of the duplicate options. (Meaning that sprinkles, fudge, cherry is really the same thing as fudge, cherry, sprinkles)
Hope this makes some sense. Good Luck.

Consider the following scenario: You have 12 people from which you need to select a president, vice president and treasurer; since these are all distinct positions, you wouldd use permutation:12 perm 3. Suppose instead that you need to select three board members; since in this case there is no distinction between board members you woul use a combination: 12 comb 3.

where the arrangement matters it is permutation
where the arrangement doesn't matter it is combination
combination is for choosing
the permutation of 4 things out of 6 things=6P4=6*5*4*3=360
combination of 6 things taking 4 at a time=6C4=6*5/1*2=15

You have 3 places to go to: the drugstore, the grocery store and the hardware store. How many ways do you have to go all 3 places? Which is to say, you select a place to go first, and where to go second. All those choices are permuations, you trade first for last or second for first and so on, it is all about order.
You are in a restaurant and they offer you two choice of vegetables with your meal: carrots, peas, potatoes, corn, rice and beans. How many different ways can you select 2 out of those 6? These are combinations, you combine two out of 6 in different ways, but there is no order that matters; potatoes and corn is the same as corn and potatoes.
