I would think that the asphalt is finefor the underside but fill in with sand to lock the pavers togather. alsoyou will need something like landscape timbers or something in the sides to hold the pavers and sand in. Just sounds like a problem waiting to happen. Personally I would remove the asphalt and this is the start of someting much more attractive.

Paving stones need a firm, porous base like sand or gravel to allow for proper drainage. Asphalt should be removed ideally before spreading the sand and/or gravel.

Asphalt has too much give......unless you just set them in sand. I'd just get a few buckets of black sealer and broom them on. Start early in the day so the heat will help it set later. Mix each bucket WELL. Make a party of it with your buddies and feed them later. Oh yes, use push brooms.

You'll want to tear up the asphalt. The stones need a stable, well-prepared base to rest in.

They can be set in with sand or concrete. If asphalt is in good shape it can act a a sub floor for the pavers.

Yes it is possible!.....depending on your city, in mine If I use first dirt and then tons of gravel it can be done. But if you want them to stay together ...you may want to use those interlocking kind.

They are usually set in "pea gravel" and leveled out. I would try the do it yourself network
