Whats the purpose of it and how does it work?

keeps the glare out of my eyes so i can see the ball and some defenders depending on the time of day in relation to how far the sun is up or down; Also absorbs most of the heat so thats were most of the sweat beads up at, instead of the top of my head and coming down and getting in my eyes during plays.

They call it "eye black" and it reduces the glare off of their cheekbones from the sun. You'll also see baseball players use this when they don't want to wear sunglasses. It also creates a more imposing look for the player (i.e. Brian Urlacher).

It eliminates glare... the sun reflects off the skin under your eyes throwing more light into your eyes which makes it harder to see on a sunny day... if you have any black makeup try it out and you'll see the difference for yourself...

It's called eye black, the purpose of eye black is to absorb the light either from the sun or the statium lights,so that player will not get the light in his eyes

Ha! I am a chick and am proud that I know this.....
They put that under their eyes so it will block the sun. Let's say they are "going long" to receive a pass and look up to catch the ball and the sun blinds their eyes. The "black stuff" helps reflect the sun so they can see better.

To block the glare from the sun. Sometimes instead of using a paint it is a sticker they stick on there. That way it doesn't run when they sweat.♥

It helps to block the sun rays in the daytime and at night it helps with the glare of the lights.
