I'm a senior in high school with over a 4.0 weighted average, and I'm thinking about doing some tutoring work for money, since no local businesses are hiring and I need to start paying car insurance soon, since I'll be driving. I'm wondering what to charge per session, and how long a session should last.
I've figured out that I can tutor any subject for levels K-8, along with HS level Biology and Chemistry. Alternatively, for levels K-6, I'm willing to offer general homework help.
I have some experience - I tutored someone who was failing two to four hours per week last year in HS Chemistry, and she ended up passing the course, including her NYS Regents Exam, which many people failed.
From what I've seen, tutors around here make anywhere from $10 to $40, at my level of education. Is $10-15 unreasonable for a general homework help session? How does $20 sound for levels 7&8 math, or HS subjects? Is this too much? Too little? Could I make it work?

Someone with a degree can charge $30.00-$40.00. For a high school student I think that you are looking more at $10.00-$15.00. Parents will be willing to pay that if their child really needs help and it will not make them go broke.
Also, the state that you live in does play a factor. In some states the cost of living is much higher and therefore you could charge more. I live in Ohio; the cost of living is not bad so you would be looking at the lower end.
I suggest 45 minutes as a time limit. Thirty minutes does not seem quite long enough. You could always say that the usual time is 30 minutes, but if the child needs extra help then you can work with him for as long as 45 minutes without an additional charge. This way they feel like they are getting a bonus.
I did that once (for my boss actually!) and I was still a student at the time. When I graduated she gave me $50.00 to thank me. People appreciate it, especially if they feel like they are getting their money's worth and will often pay a bonus.
Good luck with it!

Sounds like you have done a bit of homework to find a good price. I would think that $20.00 per session at 1/2 long would be a good price for all the way around. If you want to give a break to lower grade levels I would suggest $15.00. My son was helping tutor a friend in his class and was paid $10.00 per hour. (he is 11 years old).

$5 an hour reckoning on your understanding! in case you're tutoring some in 3 or 4 365 days French than that's greater durable to do...perhaps then $10 an hour. ask your self: How lots might I be keen to pay for somebody to tutor me French?

I'm a teacher, and I charged $20 an hour. Since you're not qualified to teach (and I mean that in a literal sense, not in that I think you're not capable), you might not have any takers at that rate. I think $15, however, would be fair and reasonable.

Both prices are reasonable. However you may want to consider a 50 dollar bonus for each increase reflected in their grade average on each report card.

I've heard of $20/hr, plus $5 in cash, always, for transportation expenses.
