I'm not sure...maybe people like wasting money? The free ones work just as good as the pay for ones...especially AVG.

Amazing - the foolishness spewed from many of the people posting to this question.

Some people have good points mixed in with mis-information.

For example, Norton DOES market VERY well... but for the most part, their product is quite poor.

Free antivirus software is better than nothing - but most commercial packages include added abilities - such as enhanced spyware cleaning and a firewall. None of the free products offer this kind of bundled ability.

Most anti-virus vendors share their "sample" viruses (the new ones they catch in their honeypots) with other vendors - they do NOT share the technologies in how to remove them. According to Secunia.com, Sophos finds MOST of the new malware first - so from a business perspective, Sophos is the most desireable product. But sophos doesn't make a home product. So you are left with the others - And McAfee traditionally offers the fastest time to release updates outside of Sophos (based on all the data I have read).

Yes, for a 2 week old virus, everyone SHOULD protect against roughly the same thing (though recently I found an instance where Dr. Web Antivirus using 3 month old definitions caught viruses that Symantec with Week old definitions failed to catch).

So which do you want - do you want something that will be just as good as everything else - in two weeks (or 3 months in the case of Symantec) - or do you want something with the best chance at protecting you from the new threats?

Becase many people believe that a free program is only free because it is created by the virus designer in order to distribute the virus more easily.
Also, there is a common belief in American society that the more something costs, the better it is. Therefore, if it is free, it must be pretty bad. "If it's so good, why don't they think anyone will pay for it?"

The reality is that the free anti-virus tools (i.e. AVG, AdAware, etc.) are just as good or better than their costly competitors.

1. Free Antiviruses don't advertise.
2. Norton and McAfee come preinstalled on machines
3. Some people think that if they don't pay for it it's not good.
4. Norton has average people convinced that it's good since it's been around so long.
5. Large businesses have to pay for antivirus software, even ones that are free for personal use.
6. Most people don't do enough research and just do what salesmen at computer stores tell them.

because getting anti-virus from net is not reliable or you can say it is not original . You can get 100% original from the market .

purchasing the software gives you the full capabilities of it...free software has limitations. Purchasing it also gives you service agreements that help maintain your PC. People who work in the technical world never use free-ware

when you buy something you get what you paid for. you get tech support and sometimes those software has bigger databases of known viruses.
