It depends. Many women don't pay attention to their normal discharge which can range from thick, like you described, to very thin.
When it's thick, that's the body's way of keeping sperm from being able to swim up to and past the cervix. Thin, that's when the sperm can swim easily.
A very thick discharge can also mean a yeast infection. While not an STD, it's uncomfortable. An STD is usually signaled by a foul smelling and discolored discharge. Please note that WHITE is not 'discolored', white is a NORMAL color.

It does not have to be an STD, but see a doc soon to check it out. If you have pain, discomfort, discharge, etc., it could be a vaginal problem also NOT related to an STD.

that is more probably if with other common signs/symptoms of STIs:
1)Itching around the vagina and/or discharge from the vagina for women
2)Discharge from the penis for men
3)Pain during sex, when urinating and/or in the pelvic area
4)Sore throats in people who have oral sex
5)Pain in the anus for people who have anal sex
6)Chancre sores (painless red sores) on the genital area, anus, tongue and/or throat
7)A scaly rash on the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet
8)Dark urine, loose, light-colored stools, and yellow eyes and skin
9)Small blisters that turn into scabs on the genital area
10)Swollen glands, fever and body aches
11)Unusual infections, unexplained fatigue, night sweats and weight loss
12)Soft, flesh-colored warts around the genital area
TYPE OF STD ACCORDING TO DISCHARGE
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease:
pus-like vaginal discharge
Trichomonas:
frothy thin, gray or greenish-white vaginal discharge
Gonorrhea:
thick, pus-like discharge
Chlamydia:
increased discharge which may be colorless and odorless

She may just have a yeast infection. Go to the doctor to make sure. She can't leave whatever she has untreated.
