i am wanting to join a sorority when i graduate, but i have heard some pretty scary hazing stories. i can handle staying up late, and doing silly things. I have a friend that claims she was beaten with a paddle, and when i asked girls at the campus i am planning to attend they wouldnt talk about it. What should i expect if i go through with this?

Hell.

and then talk to the girls who are not Greek on your campus. Greeks tend to gloss over the hazing because sororities are wonderful organizations. The RAs and friends of the girls remember the girls coming back after the sisters decided to make a cake on the girls (cover them in flower, sugar, throw eggs at them, and rub Crisco in their hair) and remember them sobbing after they were forced to eat tubs to ketchup and mustard and go through hell. The items required to pledge for one sorority on my campus cost over $300. That is before dues and beer money. These are the bad ones, but often girls don't know which sororities are good and which aren't that good before you join. National sororities are far less likely to haze than locals, so I recommend joining a national. They are much more likely to be great.

There are great sororities and horrible sororities, so talk to a bunch of upperclassmen to get the real deal on hazing (former freshmen RAs are a great source) and then see which group you align yourself with. Keep in mind, once you join the actions of all of your sisters will be reflective of you and your values. I have heard lines such as "Oh, she's an Omega Tau (made-up name), you'll score her. They are all sluts". Faculty also can also think less of you because you will be exhausted and not studying during pledging, causing you to be unprepared for class. Faculty recommendations go a long way for grad school and when you want to achieve something on campus, so upsetting them is not a good thing. They know the bad apples, so think twice before making a decision that could hurt you for the rest of your time at school. Sororities can be wonderful, but they can also be horrible.

Think carefully and good luck!

No national sorority will put up with hazing from their chapters. Its just too volatile an issue today. If somebody asks you to do something dangerous, tell them that you want to talk to an officer (or a higher level officer) or one of the chapter advisors. However, the odds are that national sorority chapters will be squeaky clean, or they won't last long. I pledged 20 yrs ago, when things could be pretty bad, and my sorority never put us into a situation that was dangerous or more than slightly embarassing.

There are rules against abusive hazing. A sorority can be shut down permanently if it violates the rules. Check with an administrator for more info.

It depends what college and sorority you pledge for. I joined Phi Sigma Sigma and there is a no hazing rule. Your college campus should have rules against that, so if it does happen you should tell an administrator and have the fraternity closed down.

If you are exposed to a dangerous hazing ritual, don't join that sorority. NOTHING is worth losing self-respect, being humiliated and possibly being very hurt. I don't have any clue why people put up with it.
