My 96 saturn SL seems to be idling high. I just got it out of the shop today where they used some kind of block seal to fix my head gasket/block problem. Could this be something related to that problem or is it a different problem?

More than likely there is no connection between the repair and the high idle.
Check for a vacuum leak at the PCV hose from the intake to the valve cover. Check for other vacuum leaks by listening for a pronounced "hiss" under the hood. Something could easily be misplaced after repairs.
Second, check to see if the thermostat was replaced, and if so was it done correctly. Is the temperature gauge reading lower than normal. If the PCM thinks that the engine isn't fully warmed up, it will cause the engine to idle a bit high, somewhat like the cars of old when the choke was left engaged.
Check also that the Coolant Temp Sensor (for the PCM, not the gauge) is connected and functioning properly.
All of these items should be inspected by the repair facility that performed the previous repairs, and shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to check.

Idinling HIGH - well that can be cause the vehicle is still over heating and the computer is idiling the engine higher to cool it off

If you have a head gasket problem and they put in block seal - that is not a fix - you have a head problem and need to repair that correctly - you are doing your self a injustice waisting money on small repairs and not fixing the problem correctly to start with.

Make sure you look and see if its overheating - that will make the engine run higher - or its low on coolant which i think the motor is using up since you have a head gasket problem . Check water level with the vehicle COOL and add JUST water - if that lower the RPM - you are still overhealting and causing the high idle.

They may have speed-ed the idle up on your engine to help the sealer work. Was the shop a Saturn Dealer or an after market shop, this type of repair is only a quick fix and the problem can come back at any time. Go to a different shop, please!

once you put in any intense pass exhaust factors you eliminate the backpressure that your EGR valve (emmission componet) or Exhaust gas recirculation valve desires to good perform, you extremely develop the quantity of unpolluted air and that would reason a delicate develop in idle besides as occasional knocking (pre-ignition). Your EGR extremely feeds exhaust gas into your engine's manifold to cut back emmisions by sabotaging your gas/air blend. next component, your intake mods could have led to the two a vacuum leak interior the installation of any new air clear out (unintended) or it may desire to no longer be connected impressive. you will have a undesirable examine valve on your brake booster, or your brake booster may be defective. the two could reason a vacuum leak and a vacuum leak of extensive proportions could reason a intense idle or maybe knocking under a load. So specific, any transformations on your vehicle could reason any style of issues. i'm guessing which you have the ok & N clear out impressive? you be attentive to you nevertheless could desire to confirm to scrub and re-oil them with the kits they sell i desire. My CRX have been given sloppy and whilst i replaced into checking it out I observed that airborne dirt and mud and sand were bypassing my clear out component all at the same time. in all probability did no longer help that i replaced into in Baja yet you be attentive to what I recommend. Now, one extra component. you are able to generally hit upon a school which will fix your vehicle's difficulty freed from fee or much extra constructive you are able to bypass there and artwork on your person. I did it whilst i replaced into in San Diego and that's the place I discovered all those products, regrettably i will purely be attentive to lots over the computer, there are various different reasons including actual harm on your throttle physique that would do this. Your choke could be sticking? no.. (given which you had an old carbureated kind) yet you have a ninety six Honda Civic = no carb... gas injected extremely. the wonderful attempt is to close off your vehicle and borrow a smoke device and look ahead to the leak. i will say that your difficulty has a ninety% hazard of being an intake/vacuum leak, perhaps a hose is off someplace. sturdy success and in case you prefer extra i will do my superb.. I don't think it's related, if too much water entered the cylinders, then the idle would lower.

You could have an air leak somewhere.

They might have raised up your idle so it wouldn't stall.

it is most likley related clinders run on compresion if it is going from one clyinder to a nother there is not as much compresion needed to run properly. the pistion comes up faster due to this. thus the higher idle. this can cause damage to your block clinder head and pistions.
