Why can't I search from the browser's address bar?

In Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab, scroll down to where it says Search from the Address bar. You probably have the box checked that says Do Not Search from the Address Bar. Change the setting to meet your preference.

Address bar is for the exact address like sending a letter and goes directly to that site.
