Well, if you are talking about physical appearances one should realize that a person is going to get "uglier" as time goes on. Especially when we turn old. We all get gray and wrinkly. We lose our youthful luster. As in the story, the duckling was just that. a baby. As it matured is when it became a beautiful swan.
When you get married it should not be for looks. There needs to be other factors involved. Your wife's looks should not be depressing you after 23 years of marriage. If you got married when you were 18 (legal age) that would put you in your early 40's. I wouldn't be looking for a super model at this point.
Unlucky? No. I am sure your wife brings more to this relationship than looks. I would feel lucky that I had a wife for 23 years. That actually says a lot on today's market. Count your blessings and enjoy what you do have and not fret over the things you think you don't have. This is not a slam, but did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, you aren't the prize winning GQ model of her life?
Look to the other things your wife has and enjoy.

That's somewhat of an awful thing to say about your spouse, but given the circumstances, I'll answer anyway.
The swan fable is true a lot of the time. I find it to be true more often when talking about girls that are still quite young. 15-18 can be an awkward phase. A lot of the girls that are a bit odd looking during these years turn out to be the most attractive of them all.
My advice is that if your level of attraction to your wife is affecting your relationship so much that you would ask this question on Yahoo Answers: Break it off and visit a college campus. I currently attend the University of Central Florida and my eyes can't even keep up with how many attractive women are around me.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

my guess is that it is worse than just an ugly duckling you have. There is probably a chemical imbalance involved. Anybody who does not respond to the proper nutrients, appreciation, aproval, acceptance, love and encouragment, all the things that cause groth. Either she is not recieving these or there is an organic difficulty preventing her from growing. Luck has little to do with growth. Inner growth is reflected by outer appearance. Even those who have little natural appearance positives develop a kind of beauty. Then there is the fact that the fable was one about one that did have the natural beauty, like someone who cleans up well. you the one who knows now

YOU help her transform into a swan by compliments, taking her to the shops that help enhance her beauty (beauty shops, spas, clothing and makeup boutiques) and treating her like the swan. Women live up to high standards BUT the standards they live up to (because of their love for you) are the standards you set for yourself and for her. She IS a swan if you've done that. . . you just need to look through the right glasses.

I think she may have been unlucky in marrying you. You're lucky that she's put up with you for 23 years.

You seem very shallow. She was good enough for you to marry 23 years ago.
