Tough choice:
1824: Professor Michael Faraday invents the first toy balloon
1835: Charles Babbage invents a mechanical calculator (ancestor of the computer.)
1847: Hungarian, Ignaz Semmelweis invents antisceptics.
1862: Alexander Parkes invents the first man-made plastic.
1866: Alfred Nobel invents dynamite.
1876: Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone.
Or
Nicolaus August Otto invents the first practical four-stroke internal combustion engine.
1885: Karl Benz invents the first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine.
But, all things considered, I guess I'll go with (ta-da)
1824:Professor Michael Faraday invents the first toy balloon.
I mean, without toy balloons, would life really be worth living?

Electric lights. That totally changed the workday and helped make manufacturing a huge industry. The resultant non-farm employment caused a ripple through the population as they moved from being a self-sufficient individual into part of a production revolution that lowered the cost of goods while increasing payroll. The was the start of our consumer economy.
