Electric lights. That totally changed the workday and helped make manufacturing a huge industry. The resultant non-farm employment caused a ripple through the population as they moved from being a self-sufficient individual into part of a production revolution that lowered the cost of goods while increasing payroll. The was the start of our consumer economy.
