it is for osteoporosis yes, it slows down the cells that resorb the bone and subsequently the bone laying cell activity increases in proportion. This way the bone density is increased. You check a DEXA scan in one year, personally I prefer Fosamax because of better results. Either way heart burn is a common side effect if not taken properly ie sit upright for 30 minutes after taking the pill etc. This or fosamax can not be taken in significan kidney disease. It is still a good drug, good luck

Actonel not only stops the bone loss of osteoporosis, but actually reverses the disease and increase bone mineral density. As the bones grow stronger, your chance of sustaining a fracture declined.
Actonel combats osteoporosis by reducing the activity of the osteoclasts and slowing the loss of calcium from bones. It is prescribed for post-menopausal woman, both to prevent osteoporosis and to strengthen the bones once disease has begun. It is also used to prevent or treat osteoporosis resulting from therapy with steroid medications, and it's used in the treatment of Paget's disease, a condition in which patches of bone become softened and enlarged.
More common side effectsabdominal pain, anxiety, back pain, bladder irritation, flu-like symptoms, gas, highblood pressure, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, nausea, so on ( to much to tell you).
Less common side effects: anemia, angina, burning or prickly sensation, dental problem, ear infection, gastrointestinal distress, heart problem, hernia, rectal problem,, skin cancer, stomach inflamation, tight muscle.
Your doctor will not prescribe actonel if you have low calcium levels in blood or the drug gives you allergic reaction, You also cannot take actonel if you are unable to stand or sit upright for atleast 30 minutes after taking the drug. The drug is not recomennded for people with severe kidney disease.
Check with your doctor before combining actonel with antacid, calcium suplements, laxatives such milk or magnesia.
If your doctor recommends you must take 35 mg once a weak or 5 mg once daily, it means you may get osteoporisis.
For Paget's disease, 30 mg once a day for two months.
For Steroid-induced ostoporosis in treatment or prevention, one 5mg once a day.
Actonel's family is known to cause problems in the canal between the mouth and the stomach (the esophagus). Among the disorderss taht have been reported are esophageal irritation, difficulty swallowing, esophageal ulcers, gastric ulcer.
you can guard such problem by taking the medication with plenty of water, swallowing the pill while standing or sitting upright, and remaining for 30 minutes afterwards. If you experiencing with chest pain, heart burn that is severe than usual, stop taking actonel, and check with your doctor.
Hope this article of actonel can help you, and you get for what you mean.
