I'd like to train as a social worker, although I've heard that it's very emotionally demanding. I'd love to hear what you have to say if you have experience. Especially I'd like to know why you entered the profession, and if it was all you expected it to be and why. It'll help me decide if it's for me or not, and even what I should specialise in.

I worked as a social worker, a dream I has since a child. I had been in care as a child and wanted to make a difference to looked after children.
I actually worked with the elderly longer than with children. It is very, very demanding and emotionally draining, lack of funding and ever increasing workloads made the job even harder.

The only recognition for SW's is the negative press when somehing goes wrong, ignoring all the positive work that happens.

I am still in the care industry but in the private sector and I earn more than my ex colleagues.

It takes a special person to be a SW, it can be rewarding but for me, more often than not was heartbreaking and very frustrating.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

My brother and a close friend are both social workers. they really enjoy their jobs but you do need to have a thick skin. there are so many rewarding aspects to the job,but a lot of hard work and heart breaking truths.
If you aim to help people, especially children, I'd recommend it to you.
