I had to drain the coolant from my 2000 Malibu last weekend.
Looking at the front of the radiator, on the lower right hand corner, there is a white nylon valve. A quarter inch drive ratchet will fit, but I'm sure there is a special tool for this. Be careful opening the drain. I was afraid I might break the valve. The coolant drains from a small port directly below the valve.
Like I said, my car is a 2000, with any luck, a 2001 isn't much different.

Open the radiator drain valve at the bottom of the radiator drain tank & remove the plug that is near the bottom of the radiator.
