I had been first been given Amoxocillin by an idiot dr who thought I had a yeast infection, but 5 days in, more burning/pain, so I saw a 2nd dr who found bacteria in my urine and gave me Cipro.
The Cipro worked and took away the symptoms 3 days in, BUT, the side effects (muscle soreness, joint tenderness, etc) was too much, so dr said stop Cipro pending lab results of urine test - I should finally have those tomorrow.
I don't see how they can make me wait for lab results - I think it makes sense that it was indeed a UTI as the Cipro WAS working. Anyway, besides drinking lots of water, what else can I do to keep this at bay? I think the dr's today really blow, and I feel like they are so dragging this out - lab test should have been DONE by day 3, now it's day 5.

First of all, there may have been some miscommunication between you and your doctor. I doubt he would use amoxicillin to treat a yeast infection. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic and will do nothing for yeast. So he may have been treating something else.
Bactrim or Septra (as another responder replied) is also used to treat UTI's. Cipro is another option. (and there are many other antibiotics that could be used) The doctor was working for you and he did what he needed to do to make you feel comfortable. He asked you to stop the cipro because of the side effects you were experiencing. There is a possibility that the fact that you used the Amoxicillin for 5 days, then Cipro for 3 days that the UTI may have been treated. He did the lab test to confirm that the UTI is now gone more than likely. Usually no news is good news, but call his clinic to confirm the results.
Cranberry juice works well to PREVENT uti's, not treat it when it is already there. Studies show that a glass of cranberry juice a day will prevent the bacteria from sticking to the cells of your urinary tract. So a glass of cranberry juice a day is great for you.
Other preventative measures:
1. never hold your urine. go when you feel the urge to prevent the bacteria from having time to grow
2. lots of fluids. your urine should be clear in color like the toilet water. not dark yellow. drink so much that your urine is clear.
3. shower before intercourse, then afterwords, urinate and drink a large glass of water to urinate again. it flushes all bacteria out of your urinary tract.
4. wear cotton underwear and loose clothing
5. avoid bubble baths
6. wipe always from front to back

Ok... first of all, the lab tests ARE NOT instant. They take time to develop. They take the sample and allow the bacteria to grow, in controlled conditions. Then, when the colony is large enough, they test it with different antibiotics to determine which ones the bacteria are susceptible to. Apparently, this bacteria WAS NOT susceptible to Amoxicillin. Unfortunately, you had side effects from the Cipro. So, what's your doctor to do?.... wait for the lab results, to determine what will treat you the fastest, with the least risk of side effects. By the way, a yeast infection will not be cured by antibiotics. In fact, many women experience yeast infections AFTER taking antibiotics, because the "good" bacteria, which keep the yeast in check, are killed by the antibiotics. There are over-the-counter medications available, should this occur. Good luck to you!!!

I think it would have been best if you stayed on the Cipro, despite the side effects. When you take antibiotics, you are supposed to finish all of your pills, even if you are feeling better. If you stop mid-course, the bacteria could come back. I don't know why the doctor would have told you to stop taking the Cipro - most good family doctors would have told you to just deal with the side effects. They may be bad, but letting the infection continue could cause devastating effects. Would you rather have some muscle aches or have full blown kidney failure?

When you guys have sex, depending on position, his penis is pressing up against your urethra and pushing bacteria into it. This will make your UTI worse. That's why you shouldn't have sex during a UTI. Also, some antibiotics can kind of cancel out the effects of birth control. That's another good reason, eh? AND It's NOT contagious.

Cipro worked awesome for me. I have frequent UTI's, I drink cranberry juice daily. As well, before sex, I try to 'freshen' up, and I get my b/f to do the same, this prevents any bacteria just waiting to get in. After sex, I'm always sure to shower, to ensure there is no bacteria that would creep in that way. - And yes, for those who are narrowminded, I do shower anyway.

It was definately UTI. Side effects should never make you stop treatment unless harmful to your health, otherwise, change treatment to another antibiotic. You should finish the dose coz antibiotics must last five days. If side effects are too scary, try Nitrofurantoin 100mg twice a day for five days. It only will give you nausea as the most evident side-effet
Quick recovery

The problem with this is that now you've stopped *2* antibotics without finishing either one of them. Thus the infection could be really bad because the bacteria might be becoming resistant.
Make sure you take whatever antibotic the doctor gives you, all of it.

You can drink cranberry juice, and also at your local pharmacy there are generic UTI pills called "Cranberry Pills" (how convenient eh?) I don't remember the actual name brand but these work the same anyways. I am known to get UTI's often and kidney stones, so take it from me!!! I agree with you on all you said as well though!
