From a standard BT landline, an 0845 number is charged at local rate and an 0800 number is free. Premium rate numbers normally average 50p-£1.50 per minute, but can be much higher. Other landline operators might vary the charges for the above.
Mobile phone companies always charge differently for all types of non-geographic & premium rate calls. In addition, 0800 numbers are charged at "standard rate" on mobile phones - probably to discourage people bypassing the network by using calling cards.

Not in answer to your question!! Most companies using 0870 and 0845 numbers also have 'normal' numbers as well. To find these unpublicised and often cheaper numbers use --'Say NO, to 0870' a website which lists these numbers. And please add any numbers that you know, if they are not listed.
I detest these numbers as I pay for 'Unlimited' calls with Telewest, but they always charge extra for 0870 and 0845 numbers, it's another UK rip-off!!

Hi you simply don't only land line telephones can dial a 0800 number for free. the reason is the carrier of your mobile service charges you for the privilege of using a mobile phone no matter what service. that is the name of the game with mobiles over various networks.
