when turning on computer, the screen turns blue and says, a problem has been detected and windows will be shut down to prevent damage.

can anyone help me with this problem or tell me how to fix it or where to go to fix it?

Before you do spend a lot of time on the other ideas and risk loosing all of your data see what Microsoft has to say. Stop 0x000000ED Error Message Mounting Volume on IDE Drive

advises that data may be corrupted by IDE disks with write caching enabled. You may receive the following error message during startup: "Stop 0x000000ED" or "Unmountable_Boot_Volume". A critical update is referenced to fix the problem.

Note: Microsoft no longer supports Win 2000. On their website is listed the causes. Note: These are for XP, but it could work for 2000.

The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.

RESOLUTION

If it's a damaged file system case then:-
1.Insert the Windows CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

5.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.

6.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.
If you can use any of this info, it came from Microsoft.
What I would try first is to see if you can start in safe mode. If you can, run Chkdsk, or Scandisk whichever one is in 2000. See if it will reboot normally, if it won't, try rebooting with the last known good configuration.
Since I skipped from 3.1 to ME I haven't used 2000, some of this may not apply. As a last resort, reinstall the operating system. If you have to do this all programs you ahve installed will have to be reinstalled.
Long, boring reading, but that is the only way I could answer. If you can't do this, get a friend who is good with computers to help.

That is what is commonly known as the blue screen of death. Most of the time when you receive this message, it means you have a hardware problem. I would put in your windows 2000 CD, and try to reload the OS. If that works, problem solved. If not, you probably have a failed hard drive.

First make sure you do not have a cd or thumb drive that it may look to boot. second when the system boots at start up press f8 and try safe mode. If that don't work you may have to repair the drive with the system disk and press r for repair.

Probably your hard drive is the problem. Get a boot disk and run scandisk. If the hard drive is alright then you need to reinstall windows.

Booted the computer with the 2000 CD-ROM, launch the Recovery Console, and run Chkdsk /r .

Corrupt harddrive maybe? If all else fails, reinstall windows. Im not a computer person, so you probably shouldnt listen to me.

you need a boot disk.. and just totally reinstall the operating system
