Well that's particularly true for NAs in the south because of runaway slaves coming into contact with those local tribes at that time.

Nowadays, it's not so much with african americans that are mixing but white americans. It's hard to find 'full-bloods' nowadays especially in the east. Most NA's live in urban areas than the rez and those folks will most likely 'mix' with non-natives. And that's why you'll always hear someone saying that their part Cherokee. Ask anyone that and someone will say that, guaranteed.

During 1700-1800s, many African-Americans intermarried with Native Americans. Sometimes slaves would run away and end up in Native American territory where they intermarried or procreated.
