Believe it or not, buttons were originally put on men's sleeves to keep them from wiping their noses on the sleeves.

Like dude said, it is to keep men from wiping their noses on the sleeves. With the buttons it would scratch them and force them to use a handkerchief.
I also find it helps the sleeves fit better around me and make me look better in the suit. I don't have much luck with suit or coat sleeves so they are useful.

Just like dude said. The military started putting buttons on the sleeves of the soldiers to stop them from wiping their nose on their sleeves when they were on parade (in full dress uniform for inspection)
