Until and if fusion reactors are developed, nuclear (fission reactors) power coupled with fuel reprocessing is the only process capable of generating the amounts of power used by the US. Solar, hydro, wind, tidal, and all the other renewable resources have a place in the overall generation mix, but none can generate the amounts of sustainable base load energy.

All have there problems , hydrogen it sounds good but if it is burned with air it will produce water vapor, and as it will burn so hot it will produce NO2. or photo chemical smog. The only way to use hydrogen is to burn it with pure ox which would be powerful but also very hot.
Quit worrying about fossil fuels and the CO2 that is produced as the spacecraft earth has the best CO2 recycle system . With the billions of cubic ft. of CO2 that is produced the plants change it to OX. very quickly and the CO2 absorbed by the plants will wash down the rivers and start the next delta all part of the cycle.

Right now I'd have to say ethanol and biodiesel. Nuclear fusion is too far off in the distant future, solar and wind power aren't reliable, and fuel cell technology isn't progressing very well.

Speaking about U.S.A.===About the only realistic source of energy in a abundant supply to do the nation any real good ==now and into the future for now==would be coal. In my opinion==this is our ace in the hole .

We can start burning Hollywood scripts and treatments. They're in a seemingly endless supply. They're totally worthless for anything else. No one could care less if we burned them. We have no competition from any other countries AND we are performing a public service.
