You don't have to cast a circle to celebrate the holiday. It also depends on the type of ritual you are doing to determine if you need a circle. The only time I cast a circle is when I ask for a Deity or higher energy to be present. Since I am not wiccan anymore I have no need to cast a circle. But I would recommend going to the bookstore and copying a circle casting for the Wicca:A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. He has a couple in the appendix. Have fun tommorow

An athame is a useful tool indeed for casting a circle, but it is not necessary, you could use a wand or even the pointer finger on your dominant hand! The old fashioned way is to take a rod and stick it in the ground it in the center of of the ritual area ( if out doors)
then place the loop end of your cord around the rod and tie your athame or wand (or even chalk) and "draw the circle" on the ground. Some start in the east, some start in the North, that is a decision you will have to make for yourself. Working in a clockwise motion (deosil-pronounced jess-ill) after the actual physical drawing of the circle is complete then you would walk around three times (again in a clock wise motion) and speak the words for raising the circle something like " I conjure thee circle of power so that you will be a boundry between the world of humans & the realm of the mighty ones, a meeting place of perfect love & perfect trust contained here-in, I call upon the guardians of the east, south, west, & north to aid me in this consecration, in the names of the Lord & Lady So be it" or something like that... then contiue on with your quarter calls Diety invocation, ritual activity(blessing, magic etc) cakes & ale, quarter release, diety release, and lifting the circle. Some even start the ritual with an altar devotion & a cleansing & blessing of the magical tools that will be used for the ritual. check here for a more tradtional approach

There are a thousand and one ways to cast a circle. The easiest is to use your pointer finger and starting from the east or north (depending on what sect you follow) make a clockwise circle around you. It can be as big as you want or as small as you want as long as you can be inside it for the ritual your all good. That is if you even want to bother with a circle. I don't cast one anymore, I do the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram or LBRP.
BTW, the wiccan religion is not the oldest one in the world. It all started with personal family beliefs and superstitions aka Paganism. The wiccan religion was started by Gerald Gardner back in the 70's. He was a member of the Ordo Templi Orientis and decided to design a religion where he could combine ceremonial magick and pagan beliefs. Even the Wiccan saying, "Do as thou wilt, an it harm none" is derived from Crowleys "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, love is the law, love under will". Wicca is a branch of Paganism.

Sweetness, you don't really "need" an athame. All you need is your own power of thought when you cast your protective circle (which you can do simply by raising your hands and slowly circling....you know how to do it. You've just forgotten a little). You'll do just fine. You really don't need a lot of rituals. You need your own thought. Blessings on you and please be careful.

You can use a wand to cast the circle or your finger. Cast the circle clockwise (deosil) take it down counterclockwise (widdershins). I always walk three times around the circle to cast but that is part of my trad. However you want to do it is up to you.

I normally use sea salt, or my athame, but you don't have to have an athame. Like many have said, you can use your finger drawing clockwise, and drawing anti clockwise to undo it.
