it sounds like its a carrot fish.
they see good in the dark, this is when they are at their most active, when you are asleep

Eggy, Your carrot fish is doing fine and thriving well as indicated by the molds on its body. It is nocturnal so you wont ever see it move or eat...remeber, it must be extremely dark!!. If however, it sinks to the bottom of the tank then you need to worry.

By your description your fish is suffering from an extreme case of vegitableitus there is no known cure,the only thing to do is to boil it then eat it if you know someone who owns a horse or donkey i am sure that they would appreciate it
