My son is scheduled to have tubes placed in his ears due to chronic ear infections (8 in a 10 month period) so my mother in law tells her friend and the friend says you had better make sure that he definitly needs this because I know a little boy that just had this done and he got an infection (not ear) from the surgery and come to find out he didnt have a spleen, thats what was causing the ear infections is the 1st place, so since the infection he got from surgery he is now mentally handicapped. All because he didnt have a spleen. Wouldnt a dr know from birth if your child didnt have a spleen, and is this even possible. Can you live without a spleen?

why don't u try asking the dr for a consultation b4 the surgery or getting a 2nd opinion. at least do some online search from a credible source. i'd rather do that than get on a site that 's not a reliable source of info.

Yes you can live without a spleen and a physician wouldn't know a child didn't have one at birth just by looking at him. If there wasn't a need to do an abdominal ultrasound, no one would have known. As for your mother-in-laws friend, everyone knows someone that had something done that the patient usually died or had some horrible crippling disease, that is human nature. Kind of like when your pregnant and everyone feels compelled to tell you their horror story. If you are wondering if your child needs tubes in his ears, get a second opinion. But if he has had chronic ear infections, tubes would probably be best. My son had tubes and did beautifully with them. So this nurses' best advice is ignore the mother-in-laws friend, get a second opinion so that you will feel comfortable with the choice you ultimately have to make and good luck to you.

Yes, you can live without a spleen. It's an organ that helps you fight off disease, but otherwise doesn't perform the vital-to-life functions that other organs perform. If you are concerned, there's always the possibility of a second opinion in regards to your son's surgery.
Sorry to be a little obnoxious, but you can also live without the 'helpful' input of your mother-in-law's friend. For one thing, that incident may have happened many years ago, and for another, haven't you noticed that for some reason, when you're in a situation like this, there's always someone that just has to tell you their war story? Especially when they find out you're expecting your first child, you hear all the gruesome details and the 50-day labor stories!
Ear tube surgery is minor, in relation to other possible things that can go wrong. Your little boy will sail through, I bet.

I know of no coorelation between having a spleen and ear infections. Both of my kids had tubes placed in their ears and did fine. Both felt a bit groggy after the surgery, but the ear aches stopped and the were more energtic and their language skill improve remarkably.

I am a Neuromuscualer Therapist.

An often overlooked but quite common cause of recurring ear infections is actually muscular in nature.

The Tensor Palatini and Levator Palatini muscles lie within the mouth and throat and attach just off the soft palate and down the throat. The importance of these muscles lies in their attachments on the membranous and cartilaginous portion of the auditory tubes. When these muscles become hypertonic (overly tight), the soft palate remains tense and the auditory tubes stay open, resulting in infections. Your health care providers will not even consider this as the cause of your son's infections but it does happen quite frequently. If, in fact, this problem is caused by hypertonic palatini muscles the tubes will do absolutely no good because they are not correcting the cause of the problem.

I highly recommend you find a Neuromuscular Therapist in your area trained in the St. John Method of Neuromuscular Therapy. They are trained to treat the involved muscles and look for other structural causes of symptoms like your sons. He may very well also have slight misalignments in the cranial bones adversely affecting his auditory tubes. Generally, if the cause is stemming from what I've described here, you'll see relief quite rapidly, possibly even immediately.

I know this sounds too simplistic to be true but I work with similar conditions everyday and find the problem is often caused by very simple things, all you need is a trained practitioner who knows where to look and how to correct it. If your son's infections are not caused by hypertonic palatinis all this will cost you is one hour of your time to get him an NMT therapy. If tense palatinis ARE the cause you'll be able to avoid the surgery and the problem will be solved forever. Start with the simplest answer and work your way up.

If you have problems locating a NMT, go to stjohnseminars.com and they'll refer you to one in your area.

Hope this helps.
