Where does the tanning bed smell come from? Tanning beds are cleaned. All you are laying on is lights so what would make the smell?

It's bacteria in your skin, and the fact that it's burning. Many lotions have anti-bacterials and other things to cover up that odor. If you ever tan with no lotion at all you'll notice the tanning bed smell is a lot stronger.

I work at a tanning salon and we are a VERY VERY clean facility. We clean the whole store top to bottom everday. We use 2 different cleaners to clean our beds after each customer, and we also "deep clean" (take each bed apart and clean underneath the acrylic) each bed on a regular basis.
Sometimes if a salon doesn't "deep clean" their beds, they get a funny smell to them after they've been heated a long time. This is because dead skin gets under the acrylic and onto the bulb and it burns.
That's the reason for that not-so-attractive smell.

I've never noticed a bad smell from the tanning bed. My tanning lotion isn't always the most pleasant, but as for a bad smell from the bed I'm not sure. You might want to make sure they are cleaning the beds thoroughly. : )

One of 2 things people sometimes have stronger odors when they sweat.2 Is the disinfectant they are using to clean the beds with each one may use a different disinfectant.It could be someone is being lazy and not disinfecting the bed after it is being used.

I've never been inside a "bad smelling" tanning salon, everyone I've been to smells like tanning lotion, which smells very good!
