Is George Bush really the Devil?

I think it is an intolerable insult to compare our President to the Devil. The Devil is nowhere near as evil as President Bush, and I hope Chavez apologizes to the Devil for this outrage. But if he doesn't, I'm sure the US will bomb his cities, invade his country, label his people as terrorists, and capture him and put him in a rigged monkey trial.

Satan demands an apology from Hugo Chavez.

If hegemony is evil, Bush could be construed as the devil.

However, Bush himself isn't necessarily evil. I'm not 100% sure he even knows what the devil is. He's certainly 100% misguided.

Chavez is a populist, and for sure, he's working that to its fullest extent. That being said, it would be absolutely natural for Chavez to consider Bush the devil.

Otherwise, many US policies are anti-Chavez, such as free market exploitation of workers (considering that "workers" in the US are termed as "labor," not as individual people with individual needs or problems), or the free market exploitation of Venezuela's natural resources, mainly oil.

In this sense (working from an orientation regarding resources), Chavez is probably looking at two different experiences when calling Bush the devil:

1) Exploitation of South American natives and their resources during Columbian times (see the textbook "Global Political Economy"), and

2) The experience of Africans during the 1890's, especially in Congo with forced labor, kidnapping-for-labor, and threat-to-family for labor in Belgian Congo (see the book "King Leopold's Ghost").

If you look to those two events (post-Columbian slave labor exploitation and Colonial exploitation), then Chavez is extrapolating those experiences with the current situation in:

1) Iraq
2) American meddling in Columbian affairs (with regards to the government)
3) Perceived American meddling in Venezuelan affairs, specifically with regards to the coup attempt against Chavez

Many in the "Third World," or the "non-aligned world" are angry at US policies, and past policies, especially proxy warfare fought on third world soil during the age of two superpowers.

There is now only one "megapower," the US. Its hegemonic designs are sure to be hated, and sure to draw attacks, whether they are verbal or physical, and most certainly to draw smears such as the devil, since Bush is the figurehead for hegemony.

It's called Posturing. A national leader may say things to an international audience, not because he belives what he is saying, but achieve a certain result.

W does it, Chavez does it, Blair does it, Castro does it, everyone does it. It possitions them for the action that they WANT to take, but can't unless the other person/leader/organisation (re)acts in a certain way.

In negotiation you have 1. A Desired Outcome and 2. A Position that you take, in order to achieve the Desired Outcome. You go to buy a used car. You are prepared to pay up to $10,000 - that is your Desired Outcome. You offer $8,000 - that's your Position. Then you negotiate until you achieve an acceptable outcome (maybe not $10,000 - maybe you agree to pay $11,000 instead) on until you walk away.
