The term is "soil conditioning". The lime helps to deacidify the soil as lime is strongly basic. (i.e. non-sacidic). In other words adding lime raises the pH of the soil (p.h. is the measure of negative hydrogen ion concentration).
Clay soil should also have organic matter added to it in order to allow it to store and release water . Clay is generally impervious to water and it easily becomes waterlogged which can "drown" plant roots and kill the plant.
Suitable organic matter is compost, green manure (plowed in plant parts l9ike clover, well rotted shepp or cow manure etc.)
Tjid materis mixed into the clay and mekes the soils more porous, and aerated.
